  • Develop and drive strategic communications plans includng media relations, external positioning and thought leadership development for clients in the social change space

What you’ll do at Fenton:

  • Provide the structure and support the overall vision for assigned projects  (e.g. web development, advertising, media, strategy, technology, etc)
  • Oversee and direct multiple projects at a time (within a given brand or client or potentially across multiple brands or clients) or a singular, large scale or highly complex project, and ensuring that these projects meet or exceed internal team and client expectations and are delivered on-time and on-budget
  • Within that role the senior project manager will likely be responsible for supervising one or more junior staff assigned to the account
  • Interface heavily with senior marketing, technical and executive management within the client team to assure that the goal is understood and addresses the customer’s business requirements.
  • Ensure that the challenge and requirements are understood by the account team and will participate in the solution developed by the team
  • Responsible for the accurate financial management of the portfolio of projects to which they’re assigned

What we’re looking for: An experienced executive assistant who will be responsible for supporting executive leadership including the Managing Director in the San Francisco office. The SF office focuses on issue advocacy campaigns, branding, messaging and engagement programs for non-profits, communications support for foundations, corporate social responsibility initiatives and cause marketing campaigns. Our clients include foundations, nonprofits, corporations, political/advocacy groups, and government agencies.

The ability to interact with staff at all levels in a casual, fast-paced environment, while remaining proactive, resourceful, with a high degree of professionalism and efficiency, is critical to this role. The ideal candidate should have 3-5 years administrative experience, and be very flexible, organized, trustworthy, and able to work in teams or self-direct day-to-day activities. What you’ll do at Fenton:

  • Provide the structure and support the overall vision for assigned projects  (e.g. web development, advertising, media, strategy, technology, etc)

THE INSTITUTE FOR NEW ECONOMIC THINKING

The Institute for New Economic Thinking (www.ineteconomics.org) is a New York City-based research and educational nonprofit foundation designed to broaden and accelerate the development of a new field of economic thought that will lead to real-world solutions to the key challenges of the 21st century. Created in response to the global financial crisis of 2008, the Institute is supporting this fundamental shift in economic ideas by funding academic research, building communities of new economic thinkers, and spreading the word about the need for change.

POSITION OVERVIEW

The Institute is seeking a Director of Communications and Public Affairs who is knowledgeable and critical of economics and optimistic about its potential to better serve society.  The Director will develop and manage a global communications architecture designed to promote the teaching and practice of sound economic theory, both in academia and within society at large. The Institute’s hope is to support research that transforms understanding of major economic problems and improves analysis of policy.

The Director should have deep experience in designing, managing, and evaluating issue-based strategic communications campaigns, both domestically and internationally. The Director will report to the Vice President of Operations, and collaborate with Vice President of Programs, The Director of Events, and the Director of Video Production to further build the brand of the organization by promoting key Institute research, leadership, and thinkers across traditional media, digital, and experiential platforms.

Institute Target Audiences:

The Institute communicates with variety of audiences, which fall into two general categories: Scholars of Economics and Related Disciplines (including researchers, professors, and PhD students) and the Educated Public (which encompasses media members, public officials and policy makers, private-sector influencers, graduate and undergraduate students, prospective and current donors, and educated citizens).

The Institute is also rapidly fortifying its global footprint, with more than 15 institutional partnerships across four continents. The Director will design and manage global outreach programs in coordination with Institute staff on the ground in these areas.

RESPONSIBILITIES

The Institute for New Economic Thinking is neither a lobbying organization nor a political entity – it aims to change the conversation in economics as a means to better serve society. The Director will be central to these efforts by bringing an entrepreneurial and intellectual approach to the design and management of a communications portfolio that currently includes:

  1. Institute media networks, both traditional and niche economics media
  2. Institute digital properties, which currently include the www.ineteconomics.org website (which is currently being redesigned for a 2015 launch) and highly active Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube communities
  3. Communications support for Institute leadership including the development of the President’s public profile and additional media support to Institute Senior Fellows and board members
  4. Communications direction and support for Institute research and grant programs in five core areas of study: Financial Stability, Political Economy and Distribution (Inequality), the Economics of Innovation, Environmental Economics, and Economic History / History of Economic Thought
  5. Communications direction and support for Institute educational projects including Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs) taught by noteworthy professors, as well as highly publicized curriculum development initiatives

Specific Tasks Include:

  • Cultivation of an extensive media network of mainstream press and niche economics outlets, as well as global network of media partners and vendors.
  • Key liaison with Vice President of Programs and other research department leadership to ensure that Institute research, grantees, and thinkers achieve maximum strategic exposure and that research content is “translated” appropriately. Extensive collaboration with the Director of Partnerships to oversee messaging done on behalf of Institute research programs housed at partner universities.
  • Development of Institute editorial “voice” and editorial calendar, ensuring that relevant, timely content is regularly deployed on high-quality Institute platforms, both on and offline
  • Primary media advisor to President and other Institute Leadership (including Senior Fellows, Governing Board and Advisory Board); aggressive development of President’s public profile
  • Design and management of growing communications staff, including Manager of Digital Communications and Creative (on staff) and other forthcoming editorial and digital hires (as determined by COO and Communications Director)
  • Extensive collaboration with the Director of Events, Director of Film and Video, Director of Development to produce experiences, educational products (including Massive Open Online Courses, or MOOCs), and other materials that engage key audiences including prospective donors.

  • 5+ years of staff management experience
  • Deep understanding of the global economy and working understanding of the economics discipline
  • Deep understanding of both domestic and international political environments
  • Strong press relationships, and the ability to cultivate and manage robust media networks across the globe (both mainstream media and niche economics press)
  • Experience working with broadcast partners
  • Deep understanding of online communications and the use of digital platforms to build communities around core issues
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills; deep experience writing both editorial copy (both print and web writing) and promotional copy (marketing materials, press releases, etc.)
  • Experience managing multiple tasks and timelines simultaneously and under pressure
  • Self-directed worker capable of initiating and developing concepts independently and finding ways to improve existing outreach efforts
  • Adept at initiating, building, and managing relationships with key Institute stakeholders
  • Mastery of Microsoft Office and related business applications
  • Knowledge of basic visual/graphic design principles a plus
  • Knowledge of website development tactics and technology a plus
  • Fluency in foreign languages a plus
  • Degree in communications, public relations, journalism, or related field
  • Inquisitive mind, collaborative demeanor, and a diplomat’s thick skin – creating fruitful bi-lateral relationships with academics and media is a challenging task but the very essence of this job
