Fenton has been chosen to assist the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial Fund in a search for its top communications officer. NLEOMF, founded in 1984 and headquartered in downtown Washington, D.C., is dedicated to honoring and remembering the service and sacrifice of law enforcement officers in the United States. It built and maintains the National Law Enforcement Officers Memorial – the nation’s monument to officers killed in the line of duty. It also will build and open in 2013 the first-ever National Law Enforcement Museum, adjacent to the Memorial in Washington.
The ideal candidate is a strong team manager with a decade or more experience leading a diverse communications and marketing program for a non-profit organization. Besides the usual communications skills, experience in fundraising and/or working in a major capital campaign is helpful, as is a knowledge of or experience with law enforcement institutions. Position Summary: The Senior Director of Communications leads an integrated communications, marketing and retail program that is designed to enhance the image and reputation of the Memorial Fund, to generate revenue through direct mail and online donations as well as retail sales, and to support the broad mission and goals of the organization. The Senior Director oversees the development and implementation of advertising, marketing, retail, public relations, constituent outreach and social media strategies to generate revenue and increase public awareness and support, and tracks the effectiveness of these strategies. The position supports development communication for A Matter of Honor: The Campaign to Build the National Law Enforcement Museum. Incumbent works closely with visitors and prospective visitors, donors and prospective donors, law enforcement officers, agencies, and organizations, representatives from the general media and trade media, online visitors and constituents, the tourism community, merchandise buyers and prospective buyers, external consultants, information technology and merchandise vendors, NLEOMF Board members and NLEOMF staff members at all levels of the organization
Primary Areas of Responsibility:
- Serves as a member of the organization’s Senior Management Team, helping to develop and implement organization-wide goals, objectives and policies.
- Leads the organization’s communications and marketing program, to include traditional print and online communications, direct mail, retail operations, video and social media.
- Oversees creation and production of all major print publications, including Rose & Shield newsletter/catalog, brochures, annual reports and print advertising; writes and edits content for many of these products.
- Oversees content, design and functionality of NLEOMF website, as well as integration and implementation of social media tools (Facebook, Blog, Twitter, YouTube).
- Directs online constituent relationship management efforts, including development of eNewsletters and other email communications; writes and edits content for some of these products.
- Manages all aspects of media relations for the NLEOMF, to include writing and distributing news releases, organizing news conferences and media coverage of special events (including National Police Week), responding to reporters’ inquiries, arranging interviews, preparing Chairman/CEO and others for media interviews, and serving as the organization’s chief spokesperson.
- Plans and manages promotion of Museum public outreach efforts and initiatives and supports Museum fundraising.
- Oversees general direction and performance of the NLEOMF’s direct mail and response program; ensures integration of direct mail with other print and online communications.
- Oversees in-store and online retail operations, with a particular focus on product promotion and integration of retail sales with other, ongoing messaging platforms.
- Represents NLEOMF at law enforcement conferences and events.
- Serves as the lead speechwriter for the Chairman/CEO; writes articles and correspondence at times.
- Serves as liaison to the DC tourism community, to include Penn Quarter Neighborhood Association, Cultural Tourism DC, Destination DC, Downtown DC BID and other organizations, which promote visitation.
- Performs other tasks and assignments as needed.
Knowledge/Skills/Abilities:
- A Bachelor’s degree, preferably in Communications, Journalism or related field; graduate degree preferred.
- 10+ years’ experience, preferably in a non-profit or law enforcement environment.
- Proven ability to manage and mentor staff, build teams, and enhance professionalism.
- Experience in and success with developing and implementing creative communications and marketing strategies.
- Experience working with local and national news media, including conducting interviews with print and electronic media outlets.
- Strong analytical and strategic-thinking skills.
- Goal oriented team player.

- Strong communication and interpersonal skills.
- Proficient computer skills; understanding of new and emerging social media tools.
- Experience serving as a contributing member of an organization’s senior management team.
Working Conditions:
- Working conditions are normal for an office environment and/or home-office setting. Position may involve a dramatically increased workload during the National Police Week.
