National Horse Protection League
Each year, tens of thousands of horses in the US are slaughtered for meat
Keeping Horses Off the Dinner Table
The Challenge: Tens of thousands of horses in America are shipped abroad each year to be slaughtered for human consumption. A group of horse advocates wanted to build a movement to pass legislation to protect these horses. They decided to attract support from horse lovers — especially lovers of horse racing and other competitions. They needed to create an independent constituency apart from traditional animal rights groups.
Our Approach: Fenton created the National Horse Protection League, a membership organization that lobbies Congress and state legislatures to prevent horse slaughter. We also created a web site that has served as the hub for a flourishing community of thousands of Americans nationwide who share their love for horses by posting pictures and stories online. The League cultivates this sense of community by integrating humor, fun fund-raising events and celebrity support to inspire action.
Progress, Accelerated: Since its founding, the National Horse Protection League has successfully advocated for two favorable court decisions to shut down horse slaughterhouses in the U.S., making it considerably less profitable for buyers to haul their horses to abattoirs in Canada and Mexico.
