“Imagine a world in which every single human being can freely share in the sum of all knowledge.” – Wikipedia founder Jimmy Wales
“Wikipedia Forever”
The Challenge: Every month, more than 330 million people around the world use Wikipedia, the world’s largest and most popular online encyclopedia. Yet many people forget – or don’t realize – that Wikipedia is actually a nonprofit initiative that relies on donations to survive.
Our Approach: With our partners, Fenton repositioned the Wikimedia Foundation and created a $7.5 million online fundraising campaign. We zeroed in on Wikipedia’s unique value proposition: harnessing the power of a global community to make information freely accessible to people who wouldn’t otherwise have it. It has become an indispensable part of our daily lives, and is ranked the 5th most visited website in the world. Without it, the digital universe would be a very different place.
We developed a campaign, “Wikipedia Forever,” that would trigger these sentiments and promote what the Wikimedia Foundation stands for: open and free access to knowledge. To highlight and build on the power of community, we channeled donors’ passion by asking them to write in their personal reasons for giving and featured the best ones in banner ads.
Progress, Accelerated: “Wikipedia Forever” proved to be the most successful fundraiser in the Foundation’s history. In just two months, more than 230,000 people donated more than $8 million, exceeding the fundraising goal by half a million dollars.
