Account Director – London Office

In an exciting new phase for the company we are opening an office in London. Since 1982, Fenton has contributed to some of the most defining social change movements of the past quarter century, from the fall of apartheid to the rise of MoveOn.org as a grassroots political force. We develop and execute strategic communications campaigns on environmental, public health, development, education and social justice issues.
Fenton is looking for an Account Director to help develop and manage business for the London office. An ideal candidate brings substantial experience in developing and managing the implementation of strategic communications programmes and campaigns for non-profit organizations, Trusts and Foundations, corporates or progressive businesses. S/he will be expected to help lead our company to greater success through business development, client management, staff supervision and energetic, creative performance.
The account director plays a pivotal role in day-to-day management of some of the company’s key accounts and provides critical advice to clients. The account director is also responsible for extensive project and budget management. Ideal candidates should have expertise in :
- Managing strategic communications for multiple clients
- Writing and reviewing proposals for new accounts
- Pitching stories to journalists (print, online and broadcast)
- Providing day-to-day supervision for assigned client accounts, including supervision of junior staff on those accounts, oversight for work product quality and budget management
- Providing strategic input on branding and message development for organizations and their public education and/or advocacy campaigns
- Writing and editing press materials, including press releases, fact sheets and opinion pieces
- Editing and advising on the creation of research reports
- Conducting communications training for clients and other spokespeople
- Landing new business with assistance from senior colleagues
- Ensuring that social media strategies are integrated with overall branding, messaging, earned media and other aspects of client campaigns and aligned with broader campaign goals
- Overseeing clients’ social media properties including creating smart, platform appropriate content
- Building clients’ capacity to smartly manage their own social media properties
Essential Qualifications:
- Seven-plus years of experience in communications, or demonstrated equivalent experience, with preference for direct experience in advocacy/political communications or agency experience
- Extensive knowledge of print and electronic news media and demonstrated success in pitching to reporters
- Experience mentoring or managing staff (directly or on work projects)
- Demonstrated ability to manage project workflow and budgets
- Demonstrated experience in building long-term, creative communications campaigns
- Experience developing network of business and political contacts
- Experience with online campaigns using social media platforms like Facebook and Twitter
- Excellent news sense and political savvy
- Ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both verbally and in written format
- Ability to interact and perform in a fast-paced, team-oriented environment
Supervision: the Account Director reports directly to the Managing Director of the London office
